If your current softener is plumbed with hard lines (copper, PEX, CPVC), order the same tank diameter and height as the old one (for example 10×54) so the valve’s inlet and outlet land close to where your pipes are now. A different tank height leaves a large gap that means cutting and re-plumbing. Brands vary slightly in width and height, so even a matched tank may need a shim or minor adjustment, but matching the size keeps that small.
